Statistics and Conclusion
Gold profits reaped a high income for California for many years, and the high number of immigrants allowed California to develop and attain statehood long before many surrounding states were able.
Gold Profits By Year:
1849 - $10 million
1850 - $41 million
1852 - $81 million
1857 - $45 million
The states near and surrounding California, such as Oregon, Arizona, Idaho and Montana, achieved statehood between the years of 1859 and 1932. Without the gold rush, California likely would have been like these states, taking a long time to achieve settlement and statehood. With the help of the Gold Rush, however, California was able to achieve statehood only two years after the first large wave of immigrants came.
